Ed Sheeran was booed at the Grammy Awards after his name was called out as the winner of the Best Pop Solo Performance.
Ed scooped the prize at the 60th Grammy Awards in Madison Square in New York last night. James Corden hosted and the event was broadcast live on CBS.
The singer won the accolade for his song ‘Shape Of You’ , but much of the audience booed. On social media, it became evident that many believed the record obsesses too heavily on the female body.
In light of the powerful #MeToo movement, a lot of people thought another of the nominated artists – P!NK, Lady Gaga, Kesha, and Kelly Clarkson – should’ve won. Ed was the only man in the category.
One person commented: “Lady Gaga wrote Million Reasons in a healing process to recover from a severe heartbreak. Kesha wrote Praying after being through her literal worst nightmare.
“Ed Sheeran wrote Shape Of You about a club girl he was horny for. Congratulations Recording Academy. Thank you for this.”
Another wrote: “Kesha really did go through hell and back to release Praying and get nominated for a Grammy, only to lose to an Ed Sheeran song about how he likes a woman’s body over a Sia sample.”
Ed also picked up the award for Pop Vocal Album on a night that also saw a spectacular performance from Kesha, and an inspirational speech from Janelle Monae.
In the lead up to the Grammys, controversy had already taken hold. Awards president Neil Portnow told Variety that if women need to “step up” if they want more Grammys.
